The Joy of

Learning Begins

Starting out

During the first year, the child is introduced to the Montessori environment and learns of the work cycle, how to treat the materials, how to exist harmoniously with the other children and how to work with his teachers.

Emphasis is placed on the development of  independence, self-confidence, self-motivation, self-discipline and, of course, the joy of learning and completing tasks through his own efforts.

These goals are achieved by the child as she works with the practical life exercises, early sensorial materials and the spoken language materials.  The child also begins lessons in zoology, botany, geography, art and music.

These exercises contribute to the foundational development of the child’s independence, concentration, problem solving ability, fine and gross motor skills, and serve as preparation for later writing, reading and formal mathematics.
